EDITORIAL

Utah's statewide newspaper supports
medical marijuana, but the state still
threatens patients with prison

Utah's legislative session ended without a medical marijuana bill being introduced. Sadly, seriously ill Utah residents will continue to be treated as criminals for using their medicine—until legislators have the courage and compassion to act. Unfortunately, legislators are not in tune with the population or with the Salt Lake Tribune, a statewide newspaper, which recently editorialized in support of medical marijuana. Click here to read the editorial.

It is time to show legislators that the public wants to change the way Utah treats medical marijuana patients. Please urge your legislators to introduce a medical marijuana bill next session: Only you can convince them that this issue is vital to Utah residents.

Please take a few moments to Take Action. After you choose your favorite pre-written letter and type in your address, our site will automatically e-mail your letter to your legislators … all with the click of a few buttons. The whole process takes less than two minutes, but it makes a world of difference. Also, you can print the letters and send them to your legislators through regular mail.

Eight states currently protect medical marijuana patients from arrest and imprisonment. In 2003, MPP helped a ninth state, Maryland, pass a law that removed the threat of prison for the medical use of marijuana. Polls consistently show massive public support for this issue. Indeed, the Salt Lake Tribune is one of many newspapers that have declared support for medical marijuana. Utah legislators must learn that a majority of the public cares about the fate of seriously ill Utah residents. This cannot happen without your help. Please Take Action now.

Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please pass this information on so that even more voices for reform can be heard.

Layton City Infringing on Local
Property Owners Rights

Staff Writer - February 26, 2007

Layton City - Code Enforcement Officers have recently swept through local neighborhoods, leaving many property owners angry or bewildered. One Code Enforcement Officer said "We don't look for violations unless we have a complaint". When questioned further the officer responded by saying "Most of us would rather not respond to anonymous complaints, but it is department policy and when we get a complaint about a property owner we have to respond".

Officers look for unregistered vehicles, weeds, improperly stored personal items, trash, untrimmed trees, and untidy yards. Most complaints are anonymous. We can only suppose why they choose not to give their names. Violations are misdemeanors and could subject the property owner to hundreds of dollars in in fines, and possibly even some jail time if the property owner gets a little too up-etty about his or her rights, such as the right to quiet enjoyment or the right to not be trespassed upon.

Perhaps there are a few individual residents in Layton who are using the city as a tool for harassment or revenge, much the way the state's DCFS office is regularly used. These spineless excuses for humanity would rather call the cops on a neighbor than go to that person and offer some help. Some who feel victimized lash out at other neighbors thinking that 'That jerk down the street has a yard way worse than mine' or "I'll bet it was that So & So a few houses down who called them on me, I'll fix him good by calling on him".

Almost all of the citizens targeted by the police are living in poverty. Many of the folks victimized by this type of enforcement are elderly or handicapped and have a hard time doing yard work. Layton officials are sympathetic, but say their hands are tied. "The Law Is The Law". City Council members were un available for comment.

Layton City General Election
Unofficial Results
Staff writer - November 11, 2005

Proving that you actually can fool most of the people most of the time: 77.52% of eligible citizens disregarded their right to vote in this election and walked away from their responsibility to OVERSEE the government by choosing who shall represent them.

Today is veterans day. These rights were secured for you by the blood sacrifice of millions of American Veterans. Is this how you repay that sacrifice? Is this the legacy of apathy that you choose to leave your children?  How long will you, or can you stay free, wallowing in your decadence and abandoning your responsibilities?

Layton - Max Lunger, an acclaimed local artist who works in Glass and Stone, in cooperation with local landscaping company AllBuild Construction, has created an Etched Glass Portrait and stone monument to slain Florida girl, Jessica Lunsford. Lunger and the Owner of AllBuild Ed Muller, traveled to Florida, braving hurricane Wilma to install the stone monument at Jessica's local church in time for its local Florida dedication. Both men were moved by Jessica's ordeal and donated thousands of dollars in time, materials and money to honor the memory of Jessica.

Utah Community News Honors Mr. Ed Muller, and Mr. Max Lunger as heroes who made a difference, and provided a moving example to all of us here in Utah. It is amazing just how good some people can be in a world that often seems so sick and twisted.

Jessica Lunsford's rape and murder was the impetus for the passage of Jessica's Law in Florida and other states. Congress is considering similar legislation to track convicted sex offenders nationally.
